Why I don't believe in the Christian god.

Born to poor Catholic parents, I was introduced into the religious rituals quite early. By the age of 5, I learnt to apply holy water on to the forehead, genuflect while crossing the central aisle, make the sign of the cross before sleeping and after waking up and when you are inside a church. In the catechism classes we were told that god created us out of his love, to know him,to love him and to gain eternal life by following his commandments. The parish priest often talked aloud about god’s love: that he  sent his own son to suffer and die to save us. My nascent brain and virgin  muscles were getting programmed to be slaves of the religion.

Mass and other liturgical services were in Syriac, and I did not understand a single word of what  was uttered, sometimes in high pitches and sometimes in a whisper.  The whole thing looked like magical rites. The priest would mutter something to a white piece of thin, small, round bread and would genuflect before  it. At times he lifted it up solemnly, all bells ringing and all lights on.

Many of the 800 families of the parish were in abject poverty. They weaved bamboo mats and cultivated tapioca in their small pieces of land.. They were half naked, hungry and emaciated unlike the vicar and a few well-to-do parishioners. And the poor were always praying more and did  the rituals more sincerely than the latter. Many of them simply died (including a few of my school mates) out of poverty and sickness. The nearest hospital was 13 kilometers away and one had to walk to reach there. The local self-styled Ayurveda or other doctors' concoctions sometimes cured them, sometimes killed them.

Our neighbor, a poor labor, used to cough often and I once saw him standing by the side of his hut coughing blood. He died after a few days and his wife, caught up with tuberculosis, died too. Their two little kids under the care of their grandma died in an year.  The priest had come for each funeral and he continued  to rave about god’s  love in his sermons. Later, after going to the seminary and reading books, I knew that half of all humans who got  birth here have died before the age of 12 without using freewill. If god admits them into heaven, he does so without any merit from their side and he could admit all humans as well. Then what is the need for Christianity or Bible?

The priest used to shout “You are born in sin, repent and ask forgiveness,  otherwise god has prepared hell to roast you for ever." Why should people born millenniums later, with no part in the disobedience of the first parents, share the original sin? God had punished the first parents enough and what was the need for the son of god to become man, suffer and die?

How can a punishment meted out by the Romans become atonement for the sins of the world? May be after the apparition of that firebrand Jew carrying a cross on his bleeding shoulders, Paul felt the good guy was suffering for others. There were so many gods at that time like Osiris-Dionysus, Mithra, who were born of virgins and who died and resurrected to save their people.  The stories were put together and a new man-god emerged through the gospels written in Greek by some unknown guys a century after the death of the Jew. The historians of his time don’t say a line about the miracle-making god with multitudes following him.

  • How can a loving god send souls to get roasted in fire for all times for some sin in their temporal life?
  • Why did Yahweh select a peasant, semi stupefied tribe as his own to the exclusion of all the others?
  • How can a loving god ask for animal and humans sacrifices? (Leviticus and exodus are full of them)?
  • God  killed 2,821,364 people as per the estimates of  Steve Wells. He even sent his angels to slit the throats of the first born kids of Egypt. Where is an element of love in all these?
  • How could god abandon the Jews whom he had chosen, for whom he killed enemies to settle them,  with whom he lived in an arc enjoying the sweet smell of blood and burning fat? He had made a covenant with Abraham to cut off the foreskin of his descendants for his protection. How could he make Christians banish, maim and murder his chosen people (Jews) for 2000 years?
  • Humans have been suffering with diseases, natural calamities and  poverty- without any help from any god. Why did this god create them to suffer in pain ?

The Church, Jesus is said to have established, has fragmented into warring sects with contradictory doctrines. It has fought thousands of wars, burnt simple women as witches, tortured and killed 'infidels' by throwing them into dens of lions or burning oil, It also killed scientists like Bruno and jailed Galileo for speaking the truth and rejecting mere foolishness advocated by the Church.

The  popes and higher clergy have led luxurious and licentious lives, many of whom made their illicit sons the next popes. Even the French revolution started due to the exploitation of the poor by the Church. Today it is  is the richest corporation and the biggest land owner in the world. The gold kept in Vatican vaults is worth billions!  It has shares in most of the leading financial institutions in the world. But it does not help the poor nor follow Christ's admonition  ‘to sell everything you have and give it to the poor.’

Pope Francis has agreed that one in fifty priests are pedophiles and  there are many who have illicit sex with girls and married women. Pope john Paul 11 apologized for the church’s 2000 years of violence, persecution, and blunder form the altar of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, on March 13, 2000. He sought forgiveness for all the sins committed. When will they openly declare that the god they profess is simply a human creation and there is no need for people to donate money to its coffers. When will they stop their anti-abortion and anti-contraceptive stands and Teresa-like-exhortations making  the poor multiply like 'sands on the seashore.' Without any heavenly father to take care  of them, the poor die like insects.

  1. I can remember my first holy communion but now am an unbeliever. People need to think for themselves and not be brainwashed

    1. See how people are made to believe such stuff while they are so young and have no independent thought. Thank you John.

  2. You narrated here is very correct... Now church is in the opposite side of god... But I don't believe in church... I believe in a god as a super natural power or a positive energy... Bible is book belongs to Jew's...so many errors in it... Partial to Jewish community... And expressed selfishness of authors.. Take only good part of it.. I love Jesus only who saved me from depression and suicidal thoughts... Don't trust anyone other than Jesus... He is loving
